Paetara Aspiring Central · Wānaka
Eight kilometres of running, broken up by eight strength stations, across two race days in Wānaka — with CrossFit Wānaka. The same stations in the same order at the same weights as the format raced internationally, judged honestly and close to home. And if you've never raced one, this is a straightforward way to find out how you'd go.
Training for HYROX Auckland? This is a full dress rehearsal — same eight stations, same order, same weights — without flying north to find out where you stand.

The format
Run 1 km. Hit a station. Run another kilometre. Hit the next one. Repeat until all eight stations are behind you, then run the last kilometre to the finish.
Individual, doubles or a relay of four, Open weights, seven age grades, and a full adaptive division. Nothing here counts towards official rankings or qualification — what you get is the format, honestly judged, close to home. No time limit. Everyone finishes.
The stations
In this order, with a kilometre of running before each one. Weights, distances and movement standards all match the international race format.
1,000 m
Straight off the first run. Set your damper, settle your breathing, don't blow up.
50 m
Four lengths of 12.5 m. Low body position, short steps, never stop moving.
50 m
Four lengths, hand over hand from the rope zone. Grip starts to matter here.
80 m
Chest to ground, then jump forward from two feet. The great equaliser.
1,000 m
The halfway point. Legs are already cooked — this is where the race is decided.
200 m
Kettlebells, eight lengths. Put them down as often as you need to, but the clock runs.
100 m
Bag on your back, rear knee to the floor every rep. The longest 100 m of your life.
100 reps
Hip crease below the knee, ball above the line. Then it's done.
Two race days
Identical race on both days — same course, same stations, same weights, same judging. Each day has its own capacity, so one can sell out while the other still has room.

Weights & age grades
There's no Pro division at this event — everyone races Open standards, and you're ranked against people your own age.
| Equipment | Female Open | Male Open |
|---|---|---|
| Sled push | 102 kg | 152 kg |
| Sled pull | 75 kg | 102 kg |
| Farmers carry | 2 × 16 kg | 2 × 24 kg |
| Sandbag lunges | 10 kg | 20 kg |
| Wall ball | 4 kg | 6 kg |
| Wall ball target | 2.7 m | 3.0 m |
Mixed doubles teams use Male Open weights throughout. Adaptive weights and movement standards are agreed individually with each athlete before race day.
Sled weights include the weight of the sled itself.
Age grade is worked out from your age on race day. You don't pick it — we calculate it from the date of birth on your entry, and it's shown back to you before you pay.
For teams, age is the average age of all team members.
Racing in the adaptive division instead? You're ranked there rather than in an age grade — read more below.
Everyone races
The same eight stations and the same 8 km — both adapted to you. We'll adapt the runs and the workstations to suit you, and adaptive athletes race alongside everyone else and are ranked in their own division rather than an age grade.
Choose Adaptive when you enter and tell us your category. We'll get in touch well before race day to agree the run route, equipment, movement standards and any support you need — nothing is decided without you.
Adaptive entries are half price. If you're racing as a doubles or a relay and any athlete on the entry is adaptive, the whole entry is half price — you don't need a code and there's nothing to claim.
If you're not sure whether Adaptive is the right entry for you, email us before you book and we'll work it out together.
Enter the adaptive divisionThe venue is fully step-free with accessible parking, changing and toilets. If there is anything we can do to make the day work better for you, tell us on your entry and we'll sort it.
Tick the adaptive box, choose the category that fits closest, and tell us anything that would help. Nothing is locked in at that point — it just starts the conversation.
Course & venue
All eight stations are set up across the two indoor courts — a sealed, sprung, fully weatherproof floor. Bad weather is not an excuse here.

Free parking on site off Plantation Road, with overflow on Reece Crescent. Please leave the spaces closest to the entrance for officials and first aid.
Spectators are free and very welcome. The station floor is a loop, so you can see your athlete at least eight times across the race.

Questions
That's most of why it exists. The stations, their order, the weights and the eight kilometres of running are all the same, so the pacing you work out here is the pacing you'll use there — particularly how hard you can afford to run before the sled. What it won't give you is a qualifying place or an official time. It's a rehearsal, not a heat.
No, and no. This is an independently organised event run to the same eight-station format as HYROX, but it is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by HYROX, and your time here counts towards nothing official — no rankings, no World Championship qualification. What you get is the exact format, honestly judged, close to home, and a real number to take into an official race.
Nothing about the race itself — same course, same stations, same weights, same judging. Pick whichever suits your weekend. Each day has its own capacity, so if one is full the other may still have room.
Yes, subject to space on the day you want to move to. Email us up to 14 days before race weekend and we'll move you across at no charge.
Yes. There is no time limit and no cut-off — the last finisher gets the same welcome as the first. If you can run a few kilometres and you're prepared to have a rough time in the middle of it, you'll finish. Most first-timers pick Individual, or grab a mate for Doubles and split the work.
We use age grades from 15–17 all the way through to 70+. You don't choose your grade — we work it out from your age on race day and show it back to you before you pay. For teams, age is the average age of all team members.
Adaptive athletes race the same eight stations and the same 8 km, with equipment and movement standards agreed individually beforehand, and are ranked in their own division rather than an age grade. Choose Adaptive when you enter and tell us your category — we'll be in touch well before race day to get it right. If you're not sure it's the right entry for you, email us before booking.
Four athletes share the whole race. Each one does two of the eight kilometres and two of the eight stations, tagging out in the changeover zone. It's the most sociable way in, and the usual way people talk a hesitant mate into their first one.
Open weights across the board — there's no Pro division at this event. Women use the Female Open standards, men use Male Open, and mixed doubles teams use Male Open. See the weights table above for exact figures.
Running shoes you're happy to wear indoors and out, whatever you like to race in, a water bottle, and your own gloves if you use them for the sled pull. Chalk is provided. Everything else — the equipment, the timing, the judging — is on us.
Entry fees aren't refundable, but you can transfer your entry to someone else for $25 up to 7 days before the event. Changing day or entry type may be possible up to the same deadline if there's space — you'd pay any difference in fee. See our refunds and transfers policy for the detail.
Absolutely, and it's free. The station floor is a compact loop, so spectators get a much better view than at most races — you'll see your athlete at least eight times. There's seating around the edge of the courts.
One kilometre, one lap of the block, marshalled at every corner. You leave the hall onto Plantation Road, head up Cliff Wilson Street, along the top and back down Reece Crescent to the roll-up door. It's flat, it's sealed, and it's the same lap every time.
If the event doesn't go ahead you get a full refund of your entry fee, whatever the reason. Bad weather on its own won't cancel it — the stations are indoors, and we can shorten or reroute the outdoor parts instead. See the refunds and transfers policy.
Entries close when full, or 7 days before race weekend
